Make Ugly Contest Entry by TheRantsofReason Make Ugly Contest Entry by TheRantsofReason
Cos why the hell not. (Updated category, with the contest more or less over i can put it in Digital instead of scraps)

Decided to try this out and try something a little different, probably isn't as cool of an approach as others when it comes to creating or designing a 'monster'. However that aside I do feel that we are our own monsters when it comes to the issue of smoking. Many are aware of the risks but don't really seem to care in the long run, our nearsighted instincts and apathy towards these things prevents us from taking any action till it's too late. All the blame can't necessarily be placed on those for those addicted as chemical addictions are genuinely difficult to break free from, all of us have a partial blame for the death toll we see today, we also all have a shared responsibility to move past our instincts and do what's right for others. I only really did this because I feel that us moving beyond our instincts of being apathetic and nearsighted about the world will fix so many more issues than the issues caused by smoking, all this is easier said than done of course, it's not easy to break past our natural behavior and our natural frame of mind. It's difficult for us to see beyond the short term into the long term and it's difficult for us to comprehend the struggle those who smoke undergo when they try to quit their chemical dependencies. We've come a long way from a society that actively encourages smoking to one that rejects it, however we have a long way to go. It's important to consider all aspects which again is easier said than done.

Additional note: This is similar to what the fallacy posters will look like, black background, white text with red highlights and colored silhouettes to represent the fallacy at hand. Still need to do the research before i can start the fallacy project at hand but i guess you all can consider this a slight teaser for will come soon. Also this is what happens when i realize this competition exists about 3 days before the competition closes. Go me..

a little heavy handed, but that really what this contest is about so you're spot on! I like how you went a different route then everyone else.

only thing I have to point out is did you mean "out" or be "our"?

Yes it was supposed to be our and not out, how embarrassing, i at least used the time fixing the error by adjusting the two red red words up top to bold.

I figured it'd be nice to go for something different as opposed to drawing a typical monster, that and i had the inspiration for this kind of image, only reason i went with this contest in the first place really.

nice and yeah worries I'm usually horrible about those types of things.
...and its like the study they did with a bunch of kids, about how they drew 'bad people' all as monsters rather than just people.

What was this study all about, i'm a bit curious. Where they asked to draw bad people? or just people in general and they happened to come across them drawing bad people as monsters?

As for the whole "people are monsters" I think i wrote "who am I?" which kinda reflects my views on people. While it's true we are indeed monsters in our own rights, we are also simultaneously saints if we allow ourselves to be. That's the only part that irked me about this entry, had to focus too much on the "we are monsters" and not enough on the polar opposite.

Arg, sorry I heard about the study on a documentary a long time ago, so I will have to go look it up.

Yeah and I have issues with how we use the word monster,

That's fine, heh i wont hold my breath though, i know how difficult such things can be to find.

I don't mind using the word monster, I'm aware that humans can be capable of horrendous things, but we are also capable of a lot of good to, it's good to acknowledge both aspects of our capabilities and where we can go as a species i feel. However i feel for the most part the contest hinted at the cigarettes being the monsters or the industry and not people themselves. I probably took it a step further by suggesting we ourselves are monsters for the reasons mentioned in the deviation. Although i admit at the time i was thinking more about political issues more so than the cigarette industry but i feel it still applies.

no I think I agree, our society produces and comes across many toxic and unhealthy things. We as a human race need to do a better job of protecting ourselves from our own creations.
